FW: Newborn Resuscitation Updates


Due to some of the recent resuscitations on L&D we have found some opportunities for improvement and have made the following changes.

Changed Code Rainbow to Neonatal Code Blue
  • Code Rainbow will no longer be used.  We learned that Code Rainbow was not widely known/recognized throughout the house and was only being activated from the NICU “code blue button”
  • All NICU Code Blue buttons in the rooms will activate – Neo Code Blue
  • All LDRP Code Blue buttons by the warmer will activate – Neo Code Blue
  • All LDRP Code Blue buttons at the head of the maternal bed will activate – Maternal  Code Blue
  • OB OR – There is only one button that is located by the circulators desk it  will activate – Maternal Code Blue. 

Optimization of kangaroo boards
  • LMAs have been added to the kangaroo boards
  • The amount of saline flushes on the kangaroo boards has been reduced

Laryngoscopes
  • There were some issues getting the new all-in-one laryngoscopes of the brand we trained with at PSL, but we have gotten approval from leadership to order the new blades
  • I will keep you updated on status of delivery and they will replace the old blades on the kangaroo boards when they are available

Difficult airway kit
  • There is a blue tackle box in the NICU that is for difficult airways.
  • Nurses will bring this if asked by the physician or during difficult resuscitation
  • Contains LMA, video laryngoscopy, oral airway, and masks

IV kit
  • There is a red tackle box in the NICU that is for newborn IV starts
